Exhibition – “A Glimpse into the Collections: Unearthed Objects, Updated Objects”

From March 21 to June 22, 2025

(Exhibition in French and German)

The museum collection of the Abbey of Payerne consists of numerous works of various types: paintings, sculptures, archaeological objects… It is this last category that is highlighted in this exhibition. These objects were mainly acquired by the museum at the beginning of its existence, even before its official establishment in 1869, when it was a cabinet of curiosities. The museum’s own history influences the presence of these objects in the collections and the knowledge associated with them.

This exhibition, “A Glimpse into the Collections,” presents the challenges surrounding archaeological excavations and the arrival of objects in museum institutions. It emphasizes the importance of care in excavation processes and the historical documentation that adds cultural value to objects. Through concrete examples, it offers a range of more or less successful situations, providing an overview of the archaeological collection and a brief insight into the excavations at the Abbey of Payerne site.
