The Cluniac monastery

10th-16th century

Shortly before the year 1000, an active religious life developed in Payerne, supported by the royal family of Upper Burgundy. Around the year 965, the Empress Adelaide, daughter of queen Bertha, and her brother Conrad of Burgondy gave the monastery of Payerne and its possessions to the Benedictine monastery of Cluny, founded half a century earlier in France.
