Concert: Judas Maccabeus, G.F. Händel

Sunday, 10 May 2026 at 5:00 pm

In May 2026, the Association des Concerts de Payerne and the Choir Pro Arte Lausanne join forces to present one of Georg Friedrich Händel’s great oratorios: Judas Maccabeus (HWV 63). This powerful work, inspired by a biblical episode of the struggle for freedom and faith, already resonated in 1746 with English political events. Today it is especially famous for the chorus that became the hymn “À toi la gloire,” a renowned song of victory with French text written by a pastor from Vaud. The rich and colorful orchestration, performed here by a specialized orchestra using historical instruments, and the beauty of the solo arias make this work one of Handel’s oratorio highlights.

The concert brings together top-level soloists, three of whom will also appear in the opera Ottone two months later, and a specialist orchestra including brass instruments specially built for Handel’s music. Musical direction is entrusted to Pascal Mayer for two concerts in Bex (Saturday, 9 May 2026) and Payerne.
