On the eve of the second Sunday of Advent, the organist, harpsichordist, choir director, and hymnologist Elie Jolliet—truly a church musician—offers us, for his visit to the organ of the parish church of Payerne, a programme built around a melody that has crossed centuries, confessional and linguistic boundaries, and even the less rigid border between sacred and secular music. In its German Lutheran form—also adopted as an Advent hymn by French-speaking Protestant churches—it is presented this evening: the melody of the chorale Von Gott will ich lassen, also known with the text Helft mir Gott’s Güte preisen. It leads us to Northern and Central Germany in the Baroque period, around the figure of Johann Sebastian Bach.
